Stanisław Mikołajczyk urodził się 18 lipca 1901 roku w Holsterhausen w Westfalii.
W latach 1918-1919 brał udział w Powstaniu Wielkopolskim oraz jako ochotnik wwojnie polsko-bolszewickiej 1920 roku.
W latach 1920-1931 był członkiem PSL, a od 1930 do 1935 roku posłem na Sejm.
W 1928 roku współtworzył i został pierwszym prezesem Wielkopolskiego Związku Młodzieży Wiejskiej.
Uczestniczył w wojnie obronnej we wrześniu 1939 roku, a po jej klęsce udał się na emigrację do Francji, a później do Wielkiej Brytanii. Od 1939 roku był wiceprzewodniczącym I Rady Narodowej Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej.
Brał udział w pracach polskiego rządu na uchodźstwie, najpierw jako wicepremier (1940-1943), a od lipca 1943 (po śmierci gen. Władysława Sikorskiego) do listopada 1944 roku jako premier rządu RP na uchodźstwie.
Bezskutecznie usiłował porozumieć się z ZSRR w sprawie polskiej granicy wschodniej oraz z PKWN odnośnie politycznej przyszłości kraju. Nie wiedział, że decyzje zapadły już podczas konferencji teherańskiej w 1943 roku. O postawie zachodnich aliantów i porozumieniu teherańskim dowiedział się podczas konferencji w Moskwie w październiku 1944 roku od ministra spraw zagranicznych ZSRR Wiaczesława Mołotowa.
Pod wpływem tych wydarzeń Mikołajczyk złożył 24 listopada 1944 roku dymisję z funkcji premiera rządu na uchodźstwie.
W czerwcu 1945 roku uczestniczył w konferencji moskiewskiej w sprawie utworzenia Tymczasowej Rady Jedności Narodowej (TRJN), później powrócił do Polski.
Po konferencji jałtańskiej (4-11.02.1945) Mikołajczyk przystąpił do TRJN jako wicepremier i minister rolnictwa, stając się wkrótce symbolem opozycji wobec komunistów oraz przywódcą lewego skrzydła socjalistów, co wywołało ogromną niechęć rządzących komunistów.
W latach 1945-1947 był szefem PSL w kraju i posłem do Krajowej Rady Narodowej. W tym okresie Mikołajczyk stał się obiektem nagonki prasy krajowej i emigracyjnej, zaś PSL był jedną z pierwszych partii zaatakowanych przez komunistów. Wspierali oni akcje rozłamowe wewnątrz PSL, przy ich poparciu do przejęcia władzy w Stronnictwie przygotowywali się m.in. Józef Niećko i Czesław Wycech, którzy zaczęli głosić poglądy antymikołajczykowskie.
Represje nasilały się. Aresztowano delegatów na PSL-owskie konferencje, rewidowano partyjne lokale, prywatne mieszkania, nawet pomieszczenia Naczelnego Komitetu Wykonawczego. Wielu działaczy wzywano na przesłuchania, proponując wystąpienie z PSL w zamian za zaprzestanie represji. Pracownicy UB śledzili działaczy, niektórym odebrano gospodarstwa na ziemiach odzyskanych. Usuwano ich z rad narodowych, z pracy w sądownictwie i administracji, wytaczano kolejne procesy, miały miejsce nawet potajemne morderstwa działaczy.
Mikołajczyk jednak wierzył, że mimo wszystko uda się przeprowadzić wolne wybory. To on był inicjatorem referendum konstytucyjnego, które miało być przeprowadzone równolegle z wyborami do sejmu w styczniu 1947 roku. Komuniści jednak przesunęli termin wyborów i sfałszowali wyniki referendum. Podczas trwania kampanii wyborczej do więzień trafiło wielu kandydatów na posłów, działaczy i mężów zaufania PSL. W efekcie według oficjalnych wyników PSL otrzymało w wyborach jedynie 10 proc. poparcia.
W październiku 1947 roku Mikołajczyk otrzymał poufne informacje, że wkrótce ma zostać pozbawiony immunitetu poselskiego i aresztowany. Prawdopodobnie ostrzegł go Stanisław Drobner z PPS.
Oficjalnym powodem zatrzymania miała być brytyjska nota skierowana do Mikołajczyka w czasie konferencji w Poczdamie. Dokument popierał domaganie się przez Polskę Szczecina. Mikołajczykowi zamierzano zarzucić, że podczas konferencji zataił pismo. Sam dokument nadesłano zaś prawdopodobnie z Moskwy.
Aresztowani mieli zostać również trzej inni PSL-owcy: Stefan Korboński, Wincenty Bryja i Kazimierz Bagiński. Całej czwórce zamierzano urządzić proces pokazowy, zakończony wyrokami śmierci.
Mikołajczyk złożył relację o możliwości aresztowania w amerykańskiej ambasadzie, prosząc o pomoc w opuszczeniu kraju.
Wśród scenariuszy jego ucieczki rozważano plan ewakuacji przez granicę z Czechosłowacją lub w jednej z ciężarówek amerykańskich, przybyłych do Warszawy po ciała żołnierzy amerykańskich, którzy zginęli w czasie wojny na terenie Polski.
21 października 1947 roku wieczorem Mikołajczyk wyjechał ciężarówką spod amerykańskiej ambasady. Ukryto go za specjalnie ułożonymi skrzyniami i paczkami. Podczas podróży ciężarówce towarzyszył samochód osobowy, który w razie zagrożenia miał pomóc Mikołajczykowi w ucieczce. Powody do niepokoju istotnie były, gdyż ciężarówka była podczas drogi dziewięć razy zatrzymywana przez posterunki drogowe.
Po przybyciu do Gdyni Mikołajczyk zatrzymał się na śniadanie w domu sekretarza ambasady amerykańskiej. Potem jego samochodem wyjechali do portu. Korzystając z chwili nieuwagi polskiego strażnika, Mikołajczyk dostał się na pokład angielskiego statku "Baltavia". Kapitan umieścił go w kajucie dla chorych. Tak Mikołajczyk dotarł do Londynu, gdzie zamieszkał z żoną i synem, którzy po wojnie nie powrócili z emigracji.
W 1948 roku przeniósł się z rodziną do Stanów Zjednoczonych, gdzie zamieszkał pod Waszyngtonem.
Do śmierci pozostał aktywnym politykiem emigracyjnym, działał w PSL, występował w Radiu Wolna Europa. Pozbawiony przez sejm PRL obywatelstwa polskiego, do końca życia był obserwowany przez komunistyczne tajne służby.
Zmarł 13 grudnia 1966 roku w Waszyngtonie.
Prochy Stanisława Mikołajczyka oraz jego żony zostały sprowadzone 2 czerwca 2000 roku do Polski i dwa dni później pochowane na Cmentarzu Zasłużonych Wielkopolan w Poznaniu. (PAP)

MOSCOW - Polish President Lech Kaczynski and some of the country's highest military and civilian leaders died when the presidential plane crashed as it came in for a landing in thick fog in western Russia on Saturday, killing 96, officials said.
Russian and Polish officials said there were no survivors on the Soviet-era Tupolev, which was taking the president, his wife and staff to events marking the 70th anniversary of the massacre of thousands of Polish officers by Soviet secret police.
The Army chief of staff, Gen. Franciszek Gagor, National Bank President Slawomir Skrzypek and Deputy Foreign Minister Andrzej Kremer were also on board, the Polish foreign ministry said.
Russia's Emergency Ministry said there were 96 dead, 88 part of a Polish state delegation.
Poland's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Piotr Paszkowski, said there were 89 people on the passenger list but one person had not shown up.
"We still cannot fully understand the scope of this tragedy and what it means for us in the future. Nothing like this has ever happened in Poland," Paszkowski said. "We can assume with great certainty that all persons on board have been killed."
The governor of the Smolensk region, where the crash took place about 11 a.m. (0700 GMT), also said no one survived.
State news channel Rossiya-24 showed footage from the crash site, with pieces of the plane scattered widely amid leafless trees and small fires burning in woods shrouded with fog. A tail fin with the Polish red and white colors stuck up from the debris.
"The Polish presidential plane did not make it to the runway while landing. Tentative findings indicate that it hit the treetops and fell apart," regional governor Sergei Anufriev said on Rossiya-24. "Nobody has survived the disaster."
The presidential Tu-154 was at least 20 years old. Polish officials have long discussed replacing the planes that carry the country's leaders but said they lacked the funds. According to the Aviation Safety Network, there have been 66 crashes involving Tu-154s, including six in the past five years. The Russian carrier Aeroflot recently withdrew its Tu-154 fleet from service.
Polish-Russian relations had been improving of late after being poisoned for decades over the Katyn massacre.
Russia never has formally apologized for the murders of some 22,000 Polish officers, but Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's decision to attend a memorial ceremony earlier this week in the forest near Katyn was seen as a gesture of goodwill toward reconciliation. Rossiya-24 showed hundreds of people around the Katyn monument, many holding Polish flags, some weeping.
Putin has been put in charge of a commission investigating the crash, the Kremlin said.
In Warsaw, Prime Minister Donald Tusk called an extraordinary meeting of his Cabinet and the national flag was lowered to half-staff at the presidential palace, where people gathered to lay flowers and light candles.
Black ribbons appeared in some windows in the Polish capital.
Poland's president is commander-in-chief of its armed forces but the position's domestic duties are chiefly symbolic. Kaczynski, 60, became president in December 2005 after defeating Tusk in that year's presidential vote.
The nationalist conservative was the twin brother of Poland's opposition leader, former Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski. Kaczynski's wife, Maria, was an economist. They had a daughter, Marta, and two granddaughters.
Kaczynski had said he would seek a second term in presidential elections this fall. He was expected to face an uphill struggle against Parliament speakerBronislaw Komorowski, the candidate of Tusk's governing Civic Platform party.
According to the constitution, Komorowski would take over presidential duties.
Poland, a nation of 38 million people, is by far the largest of the 10 formerly communist countries that have joined the European Union in recent years.
Last year, Poland was the only EU nation to avoid recession and posted economic growth of 1.7 percent.
It has become a firm U.S. ally in the region since the fall of communism -- a stance that crosses party lines.
The country sent troops to the U.S.-led war in Iraq and recently boosted its contingent in Afghanistan to some 2,600 soldiers.
U.S. Patriot missiles are expected to be deployed in Poland this year. That was a Polish condition for a 2008 deal -- backed by both Kaczynski and Tusk -- to host long-range missile defense interceptors.
The deal, which was struck by the Bush administration, angered Russia and was later reconfigured under President Barack Obama's administration.
Under the Obama plan, Poland would host a different type of missile defense interceptors as part of a more mobile system and at a later date, probably not until 2018.
Kaczynski is the first serving Polish leader to die since exiled World War II-era leader Gen. Wladyslaw Sikorski in a plane crash off Gibraltar in 1943.
U.S. State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said Saturday, "This is a horrible tragedy for Poland and we extend to the people of Poland our deepest condolences."
Neighboring Germany's foreign minister, Guido Westerwelle, said he was "shocked and full of sadness" at Kaczynski's death.
"All the German people are mourning with our Polish neighbors," Westerwelle said during a visit to South Africa.

21 lutego 2008 r. Lech Kaczyński przyjął naczelnego rabina Izraela Yonę Metzgera. Rabinowi towarzyszył naczelny rabin Polski Michael Schudrich, zaś Prezydentowi RP podsekretarz stanu w Kancelarii Prezydenta RP Ewa Junczyk-Ziomecka.
Rabin odwiedził również Irenę Sendler, o nadanie której Pokojowej Nagrody Nobla wystąpił Prezydent RP.
Rabin wspomniał też o Janie Karskim, zapewniając, iż będzie popierał starania Lecha Kaczyńskiego o to, by pomnik „Ławka Karskiego”, a także ulica z imieniem legendarnego kuriera, pojawiły się w Tel Awiwie, aby - jak w przypadku Nowego Jorku, Waszyngtonu, Kielc, Łodzi – w ten sposób uczcić postać wielkiego Polaka.
Podczas spotkania Lech Kaczyński wyraził swe zadowolenie z rozwoju społeczności żydowskiej w Polsce. Przypomniał, że Warszawa była przed wojną drugim po Nowym Jorku centrum wspólnoty żydowskiej na świecie, a Polska przez wiele wieków największym skupiskiem diaspory żydowskiej, w której powstała żydowska kultura.
